When a refrigerator makes a loud or repeated clicking sound, the cause is almost always a failed compressor start relay (the click is the relay trying and failing to start the compressor), a worn condenser-fan motor with a dry bearing, or an evaporator fan hitting frost build-up. Relay replacement runs $250–$450 and finishes in 60–90 minutes; a fan motor is similar. Sealed-system or compressor failure is more involved — we diagnose first and quote in writing. Common causes for this symptom.

  • Compressor start relay failing.

    The clicking you hear is the relay trying to start the compressor and failing. Cheap part, easy fix if caught early.

  • Condenser fan motor seized.

    The fan at the back or bottom of the unit has stopped or is grinding against debris. Adds a low rumble or grinding sound.

  • Evaporator fan motor going.

    A tick-tick-tick from inside the freezer compartment is usually the evaporator fan blade hitting frost or the motor bearing failing.

  • Compressor failure.

    A continuous loud hum that fades to silence repeatedly may be a compressor on its way out — the most expensive end of refrigeration repair.
