Magic Chef is compact and apartment-size refrigeration. The repair calculus is different.

Magic Chef HMDR and HMBR units are compact, dorm-fridge, and apartment-size platforms — typically under 10 cubic feet, often single-door, sometimes built into an under-counter cabinet. The economics are tight: a new Magic Chef compact runs $200-$400 retail, so the repair-vs-replace conversation matters more on these units than on a $4,000 French-door. We will give you the honest answer up front. We are an independent fridge-only shop and we service Magic Chef every week.

Common Magic Chef issues we see

  • Compressor start-relay failures on HMDR units past year 5. The compressor clicks but does not start, the cabinet warms over a 24-hour window. On compact units, the relay assembly often fails before the compressor itself.

Visit starts with a $65 in-home diagnosis, waived if you authorize the repair. We arrive with OEM parts on the truck for the common Magic Chef failures — start relays, thermostats, condenser fans, door gaskets, defrost heaters. Because Magic Chef compacts are inexpensive new, we will tell you on the visit if replacement makes more sense than repair, before any parts get ordered. Parts and labor under a 3-month warranty (6 to 12 months on compressor and sealed-system work).
